Roll a Sandwich Giveaway

I've had a cute sandwich clipart set from the 3AM Teacher for awhile and haven't gotten around to using it for anything yet.  I have been wanting to create something that will give my students some practice in adding three numbers.  This is something that I know my first grade math curriculum doesn't cover very well, so I knew I would need to supplement it.  I think using dice is a great way for student to beginning adding numbers since those little dots are so handy for counting.
So, this is what I made:

Free Mystery Pictures & Shabby Sale!

Happy Tuesday, everyone!  It feels like a great time for a new, Freebie, don't you think?  I had a couple of these types of mystery pictures from my student teaching days (thanks, Becky!) and my students love to work on them.  It's a great way for them to practice number recognition, as well as other Common Core standards.  (Hello, adding ten and place value!)  Here is a peak at what the packet looks like:  Go here to download the entire thing for FREE!

I have included the basic set of directions, but I like to give the students other hints while we do these in class.  Here are some ways that I give hints.  

• Color the number that comes after ____.
• Color the number that is one less than ____.
• Color the number that is 10 more/less than ____.
• Color the number that is between ____ and ____.
• ____+_____= the number you should color. (especially with facts we're working on at the time)
• Color the number that has a ___ in the tens place, and ____ in the ones place.

I hope to make the packet bigger later on and include some of these ways of giving hints.  I always do these as a whole group activity and normally I pull up a blank 120 sheet and we color along on the SmartBoard.  This really helps the visual learners.  

I like to make the students fill out a blank 120 chart the day before we do this activity- it's a great way to kill two birds, so to speak.  Let me know if you enjoy them!

The Disappearing Post?

So, I just visited my blog and my last post is gone!  Ummm, hello?  Where did you go?  

I know it posted because I had comments on it and everything.... Booo!  Since I shared some links to other's blog I have decided to rewrite it (probably a shorter version though).  
I used my Silhouette Cameo to make some cool pencil toppers for my kiddies.  I think I will use these as a little gift for my "Rock Star of the Day".  I put the toppers on my neon pencils that I got from Walmart for $.88 for a pack of 10.  Cute, right?

I bought the template, instead of making it, in an effort to save my sanity! hehe.  Here is a picture of all of them in the cute baskets that I got from Walmart for $.88 each.  

Does anyone else use the Silhouette machine for their classroom?  Besides labeling everything in sight I'm having trouble thinking of things to do with it for my classroom.  I would love to see your ideas!

Now, some Pinterest finds.  My brain is mush from thinking about Common Core and the Daily 5 that we're implementing this year, so I decided to look back through my Math Board to find some things I love and things I haven't tried yet.  

Here are some of my faves:

I plan on using these little cuties for my fast finishers or during a math center time.  I'm going to print out on card stock and laminate the pieces so I can use them for a long time.  These are skip counting puzzles.  They will be great for the beginning of the year.  These were made by Haley at My Silly Firsties.  She's sharing them for Free.  I just love FREE!

My next find is this rainbow activity for Sums of 10.  

I did this with my firsties last year and they loved it.  My talented coworker drew a rainbow outline for me and then with students' help I added the numbers and colored it in.  For some reason, the sums of 10 facts are always hard for my kids to remember, so we left this having for a few weeks to help reinforce the facts.  I first found this idea on Amanda's blog First Grade Garden.  Thanks, Amanda!

You know those little thingies that you have to try to read and then type out to prove you aren't a robot?  Annoying right?  Well, they have become even more annoying because now they have numbers that are near impossible to read.  

Well, guess what?  You don't even have to type the numbers in, that's what!  (Could you tell I was doing my best Junie B right there?)

That's right... just be a rule breaker and ignore those numbers!  It will still post your comment.  Nothing like living on the wild side, huh? ;)

For those of you that read both posts- I'm sorry!  I hope this doesn't happen again!

The Dot

Our story this week in our reading series was one of my favorites, The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.  We did several different activities for this story, including the one I'm going to talk about today.  (I hope to post later this weekend about the writing we did to go along with the story.  They turned out so cute!)

Today, we took some time to make numbers sentences during our math time.  The kids didn't look overly enthused when I gave them this news until I said the magic word.....STICKERS!  I gave each students a sheet of large dot stickers and one sheet of mini dots.  I started out by making up a story about our students of the day that went something like this:  "Princess Pea (not her real name ;-) ) had two hair bows, then her sister gave her three more bows.  How many bows does she have now?"  The students put two stickers on the paper and then drew a line straight down.  I taught them to draw a line straight down when drawing addition pictures to help my little lovelies know where their plus sign belongs.  After the line straight down they added three more stickers to the other side.  Then, we wrote our number sentence.

We did the first two problems together and then I turned them loose.  They LOVED this activity!  As I walked around the room it was so cute overhearing them talking to themselves.  Even though I didn't tell them they had to make up stories to go along with their pictures, almost every student was doing just that. When we planned this activity I assumed they would use up all their stickers before they even got the page filled.  Boy, was I wrong!  I ended up making a quick run to office so that they could all have a second paper.  Apparently, stickers are so special that they wanted to stretch out the fun time.  

It was nice to take a day off from our regular math routine.  Did you do any fun Friday math activities?

And guess what finally arrived at the end of the day today????? The Cameo I ordered- I'm sooooooo beyond excited!  I can't wait to start making stuff for my classroom.  Once I figure this thing out I think I'll have a giveaway, so stay tuned!  Feel free to pass on any great ideas you have for it! I am blessed with a SmartBoard in my classroom.  I use this almost all day, everyday.  My students love it and I love that they are so engaged in our lessons.  
For about a month, we have been completing our Math Meeting (calendar time) on the SmartBoard.  The student of the day goes up and prepares the meeting while the rest of the class works on math facts.  Once the meeting is completed, we all go over to the board and the student of the day leads our meeting.  
I love watching the student of the day lead the meeting.  It is so cute and funny to see how the mimic what I do and how I speak.  I also think it has really made them aware of how student misbehaviors can really be bothersome.  Often, I will watch as the student of the day asks another to "sit on your bottom" or "please get quiet".  You go, teach! 
Another reason I love doing Math Meeting on the SmartBoard is that is saving space!  I took down a lot of what I used to have on my whiteboards (I left a few things up for quick reference).  I now have room to expand my word wall and I will have a bulletin board I can change from time to time.  Here is a look of the first page.
