So far, I'm really liking the bones of it, but I'm missing some of the bells and whistles my old series had.<br />
The company that created Eureka Math is non-profit company, so they're working on adding online components, but right now it's a little lacking. I've been working on creating some Promethean board flip charts for my classroom.<br />
<br />
Each Eureka math lesson is divided into 4 sections: Fluency, Concept Development, Application Problem, and the Student Debrief. Each lesson is supposed to be right at an hour. Right now, it's taking us closer to double that. I know that we'll get faster as both myself and my students get used to the new vocabulary and lesson structure.<br />
<br />
I created and uploaded the Promethean flipchart I made for Module 1, Lesson 1. I've made it FREE so that you can check it out and decide if it's for you. I'm planning on creating and uploading the rest of the series this year. Please let me know what changes you'd like to see.<br />

Every year during Martin Luther King, Jr. week, my class also does Random Acts of Kindness. Our goal is normally 100 RAK's by Valentine's Day. I send home a letter to parents describing what RAK can look like at home and in the community. Then, they can send me notes any time they see their child performing a RAK. I love that parents are praising their children at home AND we also celebrate at school. When parents send the notes, we write the student's name and RAK on a heart and hang it it in the hallway. <br />
This year, I decided to cut out a step and we're sending home 10 hearts with each student. If all students bring back all 10 hearts, we will easily surpass our goal. In my note, I also tell parents to let me know if they need extra hearts. It was one of those hard decisions for me. Am I okay with all of the hearts not being perfectly uniform? I decided yes... because I probably spent over an hour last year writing on those darn things. Plus, I think they will mean more to the students. <3<br />
I have a really cute letter that goes along with it, but I borrowed some of the language from another sweet blogger and now I can't remember who it was. If you do a project like this, please let me know so I can give you credit!<br />
<br />
Along with our RAK activity, I also made this new pack for MLK, Jr. week. <span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Martin-Luther-King-Jr-Celebration-Pack" target="_blank">You can find it on TpT for just $3.</a> </span><br />

We have had some craziness going on in our lives, so I haven't had much time for the blog world.... and oh, how I have missed you! I have barely even been creating things for my own classroom. Thank goodness I follow so many great teachers on TpT!<br />
Our school got a new evaluation system this year, and it requires us to keep a ton of paperwork on file. One big part of our new tool is keeping track of parent communication. I made a handy little log to keep me easily keep track of my communications. They are free! <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bwg_W6OaLBkOaUN4RVpDQzdDSTQ" target="_blank">Click here. </a> Here is a an example:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xwf2_AKAK1w/UO4JLJNAwsI/AAAAAAAABSc/UNxmDm8z1f0/s1600/Slide1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xwf2_AKAK1w/UO4JLJNAwsI/AAAAAAAABSc/UNxmDm8z1f0/s320/Slide1.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Remember my classroom theme this year? Our class ROCKS! Well, I made these cute little "good news" notes to send home with students. Want them? They are also in the <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bwg_W6OaLBkOaUN4RVpDQzdDSTQ" target="_blank">FREE pack</a>! Yeah!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BPCGgVndnEM/UO4J3pomHjI/AAAAAAAABSo/Le-R-VQ8i0E/s1600/Slide5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BPCGgVndnEM/UO4J3pomHjI/AAAAAAAABSo/Le-R-VQ8i0E/s320/Slide5.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do you maybe have some students that didn't quite earn the "good news" note... maybe even need to do a little self-reflection? Here is a little something for them. I use these when students make some not so great choices. I have created and use other forms in the past, but this is simple and to the point. I now prefer it over my others. It's also part of the <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bwg_W6OaLBkOaUN4RVpDQzdDSTQ" target="_blank">FREE pack</a>. :)</div>

However, many of you know that this year I'm teaching a split first and second grade classroom. I have never taught second grade so I sometimes having a hard time aligning our current curriculum with the new CCSS. <br />
<div>
I found this cool giveaway (ends Sunday if you're interested!) and I would love to try out this new resource. This workbook has almost 600 pages full of common core worksheets, activities and posters. This means when I feel like I need a little extra reinforcement on a skill I won't have to create something on my own. Yesss!</div>
<div>
I can't wait to try it out - I might even order the first grade version, too. Who doesn't need additional resources, right? You should definitely check out the <a href="http://corecommonstandards.com/core-curriculum/second-grade-common-core-workbook/" target="_blank"><span style="color: orange;">Second Grade Common Core Workbook</span></a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We're getting ready to start an all-new curriculum map including Common Core standards. Oh, what fun! Has your school/state adopted the new standards? </div>

I took a day just to let my students pick out a blog design and add a picture to it. Then, I let students write things on paper and I scanned them in and let them record themselves reading on Audioboo. This was pretty time consuming for me because I was doing most of the work (besides their actually writing). Well, yesterday, I got smart. (Finally!)<br />
The classroom website that I use is by <a href="http://www.weebly.com/" style="color: orange;" target="_blank">Weebly</a>. Since I signed up for the educator website, it came with the option to set up websites for students. They also have a handy app that students can use to easily upload new posts. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EEwRYcToAOY/UJmft1EOawI/AAAAAAAABQg/Ihc_imcydao/s1600/photo+1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EEwRYcToAOY/UJmft1EOawI/AAAAAAAABQg/Ihc_imcydao/s320/photo+1.PNG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now, students are able to use our iPods and iPads to easily take pictures of their writing, type new posts, and record themselves reading their writing and tons of other ideas. <br />
This guy hated writing with a passion at the beginning of the year. I noticed that he loved reading Super Diaper Baby comic books, so one day I mentioned to him that he should write a comic book. He looked at like I was crazy and asked if I was serious. When I told him yes, he got right to work... and worked everyday for 2 weeks on this. Now, it maybe be very hard to understand what is going on in this picture, but he can explain every detail to me. The sequencing was beautiful and best of all he feels like a writer now. Sweet success! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rwf2EOcWM2w/UJmfvlLlQXI/AAAAAAAABQw/mJdwWm11R90/s1600/photo+3.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Rwf2EOcWM2w/UJmfvlLlQXI/AAAAAAAABQw/mJdwWm11R90/s320/photo+3.PNG" width="240" /></a></div>
Yesterday, my first graders were practicing measuring with non-standard units. After they measured several items around the room, I let each child choose one item to measure and then make a blog post about it. Look at what one of my kids wrote:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eVvXDhkQbhA/UJmZ9uY4rxI/AAAAAAAABPs/HITMJgYh8Hk/s1600/Screen+Shot+2012-11-06+at+5.14.12+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="392" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eVvXDhkQbhA/UJmZ9uY4rxI/AAAAAAAABPs/HITMJgYh8Hk/s640/Screen+Shot+2012-11-06+at+5.14.12+PM.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In case you can't see it, it says "Your pone was six subs tall." My kids love my poor, busted up phone. haha Another teacher asked what happened to it one day in the hallway and a student answered, "She just drops it a lot." So. Very. True. </div>
<br />
Here is a glance of his writing in the app:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VjTWMIYnNKw/UJmfulZ7OeI/AAAAAAAABQo/-R1vaaFPMY4/s1600/photo+2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VjTWMIYnNKw/UJmfulZ7OeI/AAAAAAAABQo/-R1vaaFPMY4/s320/photo+2.PNG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I let them write things for their blogs during our Daily 5 writing time. I am trying to use one Daily 5 session a day as a writing conference time. They love writing time soooo much now! It's fun and who wouldn't love getting great comments from parents, friends, and classmate on their blog? I know that I love it! <br />
<br />
How do you incorporate technology into your classroom?<br />
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03039834988736281974noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3899382635183088229.post-2975782717008725512012-10-28T12:34:00.001-05:002012-10-28T12:48:36.283-05:00Bead Spelling<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I blogged about Word Work activities a week or so ago. I mentioned our Bead Spelling and the fact that my kiddos love it. I wanted to find a better way to store our beads for the activity so that students could find beads more quickly and be able to complete more words. Here was my solution:<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E5z0kGQw1QA/UI1oTA5NOCI/AAAAAAAABNg/c6NhqMRJ6dc/s640/blogger-image--1859480611.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6syKOMmeHlM/UI1rSkgAQZI/AAAAAAAABOU/dIX8m5Sdlfk/s1600/photo+2-15.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6syKOMmeHlM/UI1rSkgAQZI/AAAAAAAABOU/dIX8m5Sdlfk/s400/photo+2-15.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First, I bought four of these containers. Each one has 12 compartments. I was originally thinking that I would use two of them so that almost every letter could have its own compartment. I changed my mind and decided I would consolidate letters so that more students would be able to do this activity. They will be happy. (Walmart did have bigger organizers that would easily fit all of the letters, but they were $9/each and these were only $2. Cheap wins.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then, I bought some letter stickers- only $1!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AnluzZp7T1Y/UI1rjEXc3tI/AAAAAAAABOc/SCsP_Y1-8ec/s1600/photo+3-9.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AnluzZp7T1Y/UI1rjEXc3tI/AAAAAAAABOc/SCsP_Y1-8ec/s320/photo+3-9.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I sorted and sorted... and.... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Voila! Bead Spelling is ready to go!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KuVRxROvP8o/UI1r49hGGoI/AAAAAAAABOo/8_QU6O-0rVs/s1600/photo+1-15.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KuVRxROvP8o/UI1r49hGGoI/AAAAAAAABOo/8_QU6O-0rVs/s320/photo+1-15.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I got both sets of beads at the 'ol Walmarts- I like the top set better, but they didn't have any when I went back to get more, so I got the wood bead set. (below)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C_-ebSpFvs8/UI1sLvStv2I/AAAAAAAABOw/4eOcwg2ygso/s1600/photo+2-16.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C_-ebSpFvs8/UI1sLvStv2I/AAAAAAAABOw/4eOcwg2ygso/s320/photo+2-16.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have another fun Word Word idea to share soon- stay tuned.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I attended a great technology seminar today with Meg Ormiston. If you get a chance to attend a conference with her- go! I have been to two of them now and learned lots of new info both times. If you can't get to a seminar with her, then check out her <span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Creating-Digital-Rich-Classroom-Teaching-Learning/dp/1935249878/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1351202748&sr=8-1&keywords=meg+ormiston" target="_blank">book</a></span>:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JYbC1yjyxko/UIm37xMoivI/AAAAAAAABJI/KmYSaSA3BkQ/s1600/51gX5vItjwL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JYbC1yjyxko/UIm37xMoivI/AAAAAAAABJI/KmYSaSA3BkQ/s1600/51gX5vItjwL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg" title="" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm going to share a few quick things with you right now. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eQivbWeaJTM/UIm5pQUzpmI/AAAAAAAABJQ/vbFZhJz20b0/s1600/reflection-app-icon@2x.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="186" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eQivbWeaJTM/UIm5pQUzpmI/AAAAAAAABJQ/vbFZhJz20b0/s200/reflection-app-icon@2x.png" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
1. <a href="https://reflectionapp.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: orange;">Reflection app</span></a><br />
This is not free, but it is going to be well worth the money I spent on it. With this app you can mirror your iPad or iPhone to your computer screen (or SMARTboard, etc) so that all students will be able to see it. It is also possible to record with it. You actually put the app on your computer instead of the iPad (weird, huh?). Then, it magically (I'm sure it really does make sense, but I choose to believe it's magic) displays your iPad on your computer screen- I can't wait to use it with my SMARTBoard. The kids will love it! You seriously have to check this out if you have an iPad in your classroom.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BR3LRmpPySA/UIm8ppsgynI/AAAAAAAABKQ/paMAU0Z8CPw/s1600/Screen+Shot+2012-10-25+at+5.22.17+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BR3LRmpPySA/UIm8ppsgynI/AAAAAAAABKQ/paMAU0Z8CPw/s320/Screen+Shot+2012-10-25+at+5.22.17+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
2. <span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.symbaloo.com/" target="_blank">Symbaloo</a></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Symbaloo is a great way to arrange and save bookmarks. I love the looks of it because it reminds me of an iPad screen with the little tiles for each webpage. You can make different web mixes (or tabs) to keep different collections together. This will be great for the classroom because I can easily keep links for students in one spot. The ability to have more than one webmix will enable me to have a page for each class (because I teach two grades this year). I love that I will be able to <i>easily</i> add/change the website available for students. You can use some pre-made tiles or use your own pictures and create custom tiles. Here is a shot of a quick page I made for my students to start with. I made tiles for our class website, school website, AR, SpellingCity, and TumbleBooks. Pretty empty now, but I'm sure that we'll quickly fill it up! I'm planning on making it my homepage so that students won't have any problems accessing it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G9fVSYDdrxk/UIm8pXWlaXI/AAAAAAAABKI/qH7WPdotvjA/s1600/Screen+Shot+2012-10-25+at+5.16.51+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G9fVSYDdrxk/UIm8pXWlaXI/AAAAAAAABKI/qH7WPdotvjA/s320/Screen+Shot+2012-10-25+at+5.16.51+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
3. <span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://todaysmeet.com/" target="_blank">Today's Meet</a></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-An-JR_KIF2g/UInOQdELPDI/AAAAAAAABLI/v-NGJJ8zf4A/s1600/Screen+Shot+2012-10-25+at+6.41.14+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="190" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-An-JR_KIF2g/UInOQdELPDI/AAAAAAAABLI/v-NGJJ8zf4A/s320/Screen+Shot+2012-10-25+at+6.41.14+PM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a fun (and useful) way for students to communicate with you and each other. Very much like Twitter in that you can only use 140 characters at a time. (Great way to practice summarizing!) Click here to join my page and chat. Leave a comment on how you think you could use this in your classroom! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We covered so much more than just these 3 things, but these three are things that I had never heard of before today. I love learned new things and Meg is such an energetic and fun presenter. Have you learned any cool technology tools lately? Please share!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
*******************</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I almost forgot to update you- I survived my three 5K's in October and I have two scheduled for November. I have decided that I don't really love running, but I love to run races. I guess my competitive side is stronger than I thought. I would much rather run a 5K race than to run by myself. Good thing I have plenty of them to keep me busy! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I got a new pair of earbuds today (thanks, Ab!) and I'm in love!!!! I have never been able to run without my earbuds constantly falling out. I now have an answer- <span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.yurbuds.com/" target="_blank">yurbuds</a></span>! They. Are. Awesome. Seriously. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you have a hard time with earbuds, you should definitely check them out. </div>

Congrats to Cassandra from Adventures in Room 5 for winning my Roll and Cover Sandwich Pack! <br />
********************<br />
Wish me luck this weekend- I'm running my 3rd 5K this month! It's also the first one that I'm doing with my sister, so it should be fun. (Plus we're wearing some ladybug costumes that my mom made us when we were about 8 and 5 years old... bahaha!) My darling husband is dressing up like the 90's Andre Agassi... his outfit is scarily similar to this (complete with the mullet wig):<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-apixh0pFf7M/UH9M9whTkQI/AAAAAAAABIQ/slvGxvM1ijA/s1600/agassi91.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-apixh0pFf7M/UH9M9whTkQI/AAAAAAAABIQ/slvGxvM1ijA/s320/agassi91.jpg" width="273" /></a></div>
I'm not sure I'll be able to run because I might pee my pants from laughing so hard. Looking forward to the weekend! :)</div>

I have been wanting to create something that will give my students some practice in adding three numbers. This is something that I know my first grade math curriculum doesn't cover very well, so I knew I would need to supplement it. I think using dice is a great way for student to beginning adding numbers since those little dots are so handy for counting.<br />
So, this is what I made:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c8JabQHHUAI/UHrTBwh4W2I/AAAAAAAABEY/36P4WC4D2sY/s1600/Slide01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c8JabQHHUAI/UHrTBwh4W2I/AAAAAAAABEY/36P4WC4D2sY/s320/Slide01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0BSJphZMekU/UHrTClGqMlI/AAAAAAAABEg/MfRI2J5b4n8/s1600/Slide02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="494" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0BSJphZMekU/UHrTClGqMlI/AAAAAAAABEg/MfRI2J5b4n8/s640/Slide02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Here is a sample page:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oco8vJ31ZPU/UHrTFTyk8MI/AAAAAAAABFA/wA7rPjhyh1I/s1600/Slide06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oco8vJ31ZPU/UHrTFTyk8MI/AAAAAAAABFA/wA7rPjhyh1I/s320/Slide06.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Would like to have this set for your littles? Well, you can! Just visit my <span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Roll-and-Cover-Sandwich-Set" target="_blank">TpT store </a></span>and grab it up for just $2 or you can enter to win it! I was on that side of town and who really needs an excuse to buy classroom stuff, right? I went in thinking I don't really <i>need</i> anything at all. I came out spending $25... isn't that how it always works?<br />
Look at the first thing I found:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
My kids love using these with our SMARTboard! The last couple that I bought were $4 each, so these are a steal! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zzYR4PREXlw/UHm_6t1IegI/AAAAAAAABBQ/Lg2qJJB-7Bs/s1600/photo+2-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zzYR4PREXlw/UHm_6t1IegI/AAAAAAAABBQ/Lg2qJJB-7Bs/s320/photo+2-13.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, I grabbed a package of sentence strips because that's what I do every time I'm there. It's a sickness, I think.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UQ7O55l9_RA/UHm_2LXrm_I/AAAAAAAABA4/PHvS5RwjQsY/s1600/photo+1-13.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UQ7O55l9_RA/UHm_2LXrm_I/AAAAAAAABA4/PHvS5RwjQsY/s320/photo+1-13.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I found these:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pKOJs4JTgHc/UHnB0kagg5I/AAAAAAAABCE/BpEVGY-psak/s1600/photo+4-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pKOJs4JTgHc/UHnB0kagg5I/AAAAAAAABCE/BpEVGY-psak/s320/photo+4-4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

There are several different sets, so I'm planning on using them in a few different ways. They are much smaller than a regular cookie sheet, so I will be able to easily store them on my shelves. Yay! They had several different shapes/styles. <span style="color: orange;">(Note: I got them out to play with them and I maybe needed one size bigger. I decided to store magnets in bins instead of the on the trays so that kids will have time to create on the pans.)</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XdybJ14LS7E/UHm_-xCx50I/AAAAAAAABBo/rbMNMn-JLCY/s1600/photo+5-3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XdybJ14LS7E/UHm_-xCx50I/AAAAAAAABBo/rbMNMn-JLCY/s320/photo+5-3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I liked this pack because I think students will be able to use it to create sentences. There weren't any end marks or capitals which is a problem because I really need those skills reinforced. <br />
So, enter my idea: I am going to laminate some tiny band aides (or maybe even the circle ones) so that students can put them over the letter at the beginning of the sentence or at the end where the end marks belong. Hopefully, they will be excited to do this and remember those capitals and end marks!<br />
<br />
I also had to get a few other things- a new stamp pad, some cute bookmarks, Halloween stickers, and... tattoos! These are probably going to be used for really special occasions. So, all in all, a productive Dollar Store trip. <br />

If you haven't done it yet, head over to <span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2012/10/currently-october-for-classroom-and-you.html" target="_blank">Farley's blog</a></span> and join the fun!<br />
Here is what is going on in my crazy head this week:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ovz8uIgIda4/UHNXES_kyZI/AAAAAAAAA_8/55oMSYm-qfA/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Ovz8uIgIda4/UHNXES_kyZI/AAAAAAAAA_8/55oMSYm-qfA/s640/Slide1.jpg" width="494" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Listening: I know I should be ashamed, but I'm not. I like trashy TV every now and then.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Loving: After it rained all last week, it's finally sunny out. High 50's outside, so it feels great with the windows open. I even rode my bicycle to the school to work in my classroom today.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Thinking: I made my Currently this morning. I did go back to the school. That's right... several hours later and I feel ready for the week!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Wanting: He works 12 hour shifts, which means I'm home alone most of the day. Boo... plus he's going to spin class after work, so it will be even longer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Needing: I decided to go for a bike instead. Hopefully, I can get a run in tomorrow. I have a 5k every weekend this month, which is crazy! At the one this past weekend, I had my personal best time of 28:12. By the end of the month, it will either be faster because I'm getting better or way slower because I'm exhausted! haha</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u4x6pbknCwU/UHNYru-HZzI/AAAAAAAABAE/RZFf_aCai9I/s1600/622212_10151269153693474_1270234476_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-u4x6pbknCwU/UHNYru-HZzI/AAAAAAAABAE/RZFf_aCai9I/s320/622212_10151269153693474_1270234476_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I was wearing my "Go Team Jo" shirt in honor of my cousin's daughter who was diagnosed with cancer at only 7 weeks old. She is now a cancer survivor! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Book: I love Junie B. Jones "Boo... and I Mean It!" I read it to my class every year and I have seriously considered coming to school dressed as Squirty the Clown... LOL</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now I'm off to check out what others have posted for Currently. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you do join, don't forget the Rule of 3! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm thinking of having a giveaway soon. I'm trying to decide what I want to do... any suggestions?</div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03039834988736281974noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3899382635183088229.post-30930045089834642372012-10-07T15:15:00.003-05:002012-10-07T15:56:51.246-05:00Word Work- we're rockin' it!<br />
As many of you know, this is my first year using Daily 5 in my classroom. I was really nervous about it at first, but after about a week of building stamina I was completely convinced it was perfect for my classroom. My kids are more excited than ever to read and write. I love the opportunity it gives me to work with small groups and individual students. I'm in love with D5!<br />
We have been working on building our stamina for awhile and maybe a little more slowly than we needed to, but by doing it this way I am <i>positive</i> my students have really built their stamina. I just introduced Word Work last week and the students were so, so excited to start it. I started with these activities:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NiVVRkJotLE/UHHabY9pGHI/AAAAAAAAA8I/6BlqSoRGWvQ/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NiVVRkJotLE/UHHabY9pGHI/AAAAAAAAA8I/6BlqSoRGWvQ/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="247" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Pf5C2LXWSY0/UHHab0FMlWI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/Ylw4r9sim0c/s1600/Slide2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Pf5C2LXWSY0/UHHab0FMlWI/AAAAAAAAA8Q/Ylw4r9sim0c/s320/Slide2.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><b>Scrabble spelling</b></span>- One of my co-workers generously donated Scrabble tiles to our classroom. :)<br />
You could also just use the worksheet on the left if you don't have the tiles. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Scrabble-Tile-Spelling" target="_blank"> <span style="color: orange;">Here</span></a> is a link to the recording pages I made.<br />
<br />
<b style="color: #6aa84f;">Bendaroo Spelling- </b>My awesome mother bought me 5 boxes of Bendaroos that she found on clearance. Score! My kids are loving them. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Bendaroos-Mega-Pack-500-Pieces/dp/B002YI6FC8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349638930&sr=8-1&keywords=bendaroos" target="_blank"><span style="color: orange;">These</span></a> are also a pretty good deal. I separated them into separate plastic baggies so that students can just grab a bag and get started working quickly. They also know that they can grab a clipboard if they're wanting to sit on the floor.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><b>Stamper Spelling</b></span>- This is just what it sounds like. Kids use rubber letter stamps (<span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Educational-Insights-Stamp-Transparent-Stamps/dp/B000ID1EMC/ref=sr_1_3?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1349639092&sr=1-3&keywords=letter+stamps" target="_blank">like these</a></span>) to spell words. I have the stamps, stamp pad and plain paper stored in a plastic bin.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><b>Rainbow Spelling</b></span>- This is an idea that I found on Pinterest. You can find the original <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Rainbow-Writing-Roll-and-Spell" target="_blank"><span style="color: orange;">item</span></a> from Gracehopper Learning <span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Rainbow-Writing-Roll-and-Spell" target="_blank">here</a></span> on TpT. To give my students easy access to this activity, I shrank the original file down to 1/4 page and printed four per page. I was then able to glue it down on some card stock and laminate it so that it would be durable. In a quart-sized bag, I put it in the instruction sheet, 6 markers and one die. I found some awesome eraser "dot cubes" aka dice at the Dollar Tree. I love them because they are quiet when students roll them on desks. ;) All of the materials that students need are stored inside one plastic bag, so they can just grab and go. <br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #6aa84f;">Bead Spelling</span></b>- For this activity, I found a bag of letter beads on clearance at Walmart. I just love a good bargain. Then, I bought some plasticy string stuff (think Boondoggle keychains) at the Dollar Tree for student to use. This stuff is great because it won't ravel or fray when students are using it. It was also really cheap. Plus, every time I see it it makes me giggle because this is all I can think of:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pnlUbbSil0Y/UHHeOlL4vqI/AAAAAAAAA9E/quTPzNiyp4g/s1600/images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pnlUbbSil0Y/UHHeOlL4vqI/AAAAAAAAA9E/quTPzNiyp4g/s1600/images.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm still working on the perfect way to store this center. Right now all of the beads are just dumped into a plastic storage bin, but I'm thinking I want a way to separate letters so that the student can quickly make words...hmmm. Any ideas on storage containers?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><b>Foam Letter Spelling-</b></span> This is pretty self explanatory. My wonderful mother also bought some foam letter puzzles for me and I popped out all the letters so that students can spelling with them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mixed-Up Sentences- The final Word Work activity that I've introduced so far to my students is from The School Supply Addict's blog. To find out more about this cool activity, see her <span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.theschoolsupplyaddict.com/1/post/2012/07/mixed-up-sentences.html" target="_blank">blog post</a></span>. My students really enjoyed this activity. I only have two sets right now, but I'm going to make more since they loved it so much. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Mixed-Up-Sentences-Freebie" target="_blank"><span style="color: orange;">Here</span></a> is the link to get the freebie recording sheets. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To go along with our Word Work activities, I also made a supply request sheet. This will (hopefully) prevent students from interrupting me when I'm working with small groups. I hope it works! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1_BANLSmLdM/UHHizBAIeNI/AAAAAAAAA94/w3-s2qeUUAc/s1600/Slide3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1_BANLSmLdM/UHHizBAIeNI/AAAAAAAAA94/w3-s2qeUUAc/s320/Slide3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Click <span style="color: orange;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bwg_W6OaLBkObXlpem5Lelhyc1k" target="_blank">here</a></span> if you would like a copy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once we get some more stamina added to our graph, I plan on adding more activities that my students can choose. I have found lots of great ideas on Pinterest. What are your students' favorite Word Work activities? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a cute pic of my littles doing Word Work this week. The two that appear to be looking at me were actually checking out our spelling word list on the wall. Isn't it great to see completely engaged students? I love it! (I also love the new panoramic feature on the iPhone.)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also just posted some cute little Chevron Writing Prompt Cards on my TpT store. Over 60 fun writing prompts for students. <span style="color: orange;"><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Chevron-Writing-Prompt-Cards" target="_blank">Go grab them for just $2.00!</a></span> </div>

I have decided (if you didn't already guess from the post title) that I am going to facilitate student-led conferences this year. Our school has adopted a new evaluation system this year (based on the Danielson model) and I believe that student-led conferences are the direction we should be heading. <br />
I also believe that if parents hear goals and reflections from their child, they might take it to heart more than when I say it. I hope this is true! <br />
<br />
I decided that I wanted to make some forms to lead my students in their planning for our conferences. They love our puppy dog clipart on our Daily 5 posters, so I decided to use the same clipart for our conference pack. Since I used this, I do have to charge for the pack. It's only $3 and I think it is well worth it! <br />
Here is sneak peek:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Gs1hhD_Zg-4/UGhI1DvEd5I/AAAAAAAAA7U/rQf2GK5DmRY/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Gs1hhD_Zg-4/UGhI1DvEd5I/AAAAAAAAA7U/rQf2GK5DmRY/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It contains 11 pages of goodies to help with your planning. As always, I'm happy to edit/add to the product for you. Just send me a quick message with what you need changed. Hope you like it. I would like for two people to proofread it for me, so head over to <span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/FirstWithFranklin" target="_blank">Facebook and comment on my status </a></span>if you're interested. The first two people to comment will get the pack for free! </div>

Have you done student-led conferences before? Have any great advice for a first-timer? :)</div>
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03039834988736281974noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3899382635183088229.post-88257244180975018292012-09-23T19:56:00.001-05:002012-09-23T19:56:10.157-05:00What's better than a cute font? A FREE cute font (or 5!)So, last time I posted I was saying how I was back from being MIA. I lied. Don't call the blog police on me... please!<br />
This teaching two grades at once is kicking my behind. Majorly. Today, I spent 4 hours at school working and a couple more hours at home. Just when I think I have the hang of it, I have to add something else to mix. Ahhh! Hopefully next year when I just teach one grade it will seem like a breeze. <br />
Daily 5 is going really well for us so far- this is my first year implementing it. We've made our Read to Self goal and we're almost to our Writing goal. We're working on Read to Someone, but I haven't yet introduced Listening or Word Work. I hope to add them in the next two weeks. My kiddos are amazing me at what they are able to do so far!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

Last week, I saw Rowdy is Room 300's<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="http://rowdyinroom300.blogspot.com/2012/09/some-new-fonts.html" target="_blank"> post</a></span> about iFontMaker for iPad. I had been wanting to download this app forever, but I was hesitant because it was $7. I'm cheap when it comes to apps, but since she gave it such a good review I decided I needed to check it out. <br />
Here is what I have so far. I've started another really fun one, but it's taking awhile. I will post it when I'm finished. <br />

It feels like a great time for a new, Freebie, don't you think? I had a couple of these types of mystery pictures from my student teaching days (thanks, Becky!) and my students love to work on them. It's a great way for them to practice number recognition, as well as other Common Core standards. (Hello, adding ten and place value!) Here is a peak at what the packet looks like: <span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/120-Charts-and-Pictures" target="_blank">Go here to download the entire thing for FREE!</a></span><br />

<br />
<div>
I have included the basic set of directions, but I like to give the students other hints while we do these in class. Here are some ways that I give hints. </div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Color the number that comes after ____.</li>
<li>Color the number that is one less than ____.</li>
<li>Color the number that is 10 more/less than ____.</li>
<li>Color the number that is between ____ and ____.</li>
<li>____+_____= the number you should color. (especially with facts we're working on at the time)</li>
<li>Color the number that has a ___ in the tens place, and ____ in the ones place.</li>
</ul>
<div>
I hope to make the packet bigger later on and include some of these ways of giving hints. I always do these as a whole group activity and normally I pull up a blank 120 sheet and we color along on the SmartBoard. This really helps the visual learners. </div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
I like to make the students fill out a blank 120 chart the day before we do this activity- it's a great way to kill two birds, so to speak. Let me know if you enjoy them! </div>
<div>

Life has been super, duper insane since school started and I just haven't had one extra ounce of energy or motivation to blog lately. However, I think I'm back! :)<br />
We had a great weekend back in my husband's hometown this weekend I feel so relaxed and re-energized. Bring on the week! (Except that I haven't actually done my plans for this week yet... small detail, really).<br />
<br />
The first thing I want to tell you about is my most favorite back to school activity. I totally screwed up and forgot to take a picture of it for y'all... so sorry! I will try to be very descriptive for you though.<br />
Here is a picture that I take of the Rockstar Student. (This goes on the poster in the hall, as well as their take-home book.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eGWKwyIxKlg/UE0IqP2WjuI/AAAAAAAAA0o/blpmOfENwUQ/s1600/cb.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eGWKwyIxKlg/UE0IqP2WjuI/AAAAAAAAA0o/blpmOfENwUQ/s320/cb.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Right behind my little guy, you can see the cool chair covers that I got at the Target Dollar spot. They say Star Student and have a little sleeve where the RS's name can be slid in on a sentence strip. I think we'll use these all year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
On the right side of the picture, you can see the orange pocket chart, right? I use this for two things during RockStar of the Day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. It holds the names of all the potential RockStars. I write each student's name on a sentence strip and then cut it up. I paperclip all of the letters in each child's name and put it backwards in the chart so that the kiddos won't know who I am picking. Then, each day I pick a name. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm a little evil... I like to play with their little minds a little.. hehe</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I will point to one and then say "This one is perfect today!" Then I act like a total nerd and pretend another catches my eye start to pick it up. (They think this is hilarious and they are usually telling me which one to pick.) When I finally do choose a name, I have everyone stand up. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then, I start by saying "This person has a *whatever random letter you choose* in his/her name. Everyone with that letter in their name stays standing.. I keep giving clues until only one child is left standing and he/she becomes star of the day!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. Did you think I forgot to tell you the second use for the pocket chart? I know, I was rambling a little. The RockStar of the Day uses the pocket chart to put the letters in his/her name in the correct order. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next part is probably my students' favorite part. We do a cheer for the RS's name. The RS leads it and we yell back. It's easy... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
RS: "Give me a J!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Us: "J!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
RS: "Give me an "O"!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Us: "O!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
RS: "Give me a "H!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Us: "H"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
RS: "Give me a "N!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Us: "N!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
RS: "What's that spell?"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Us: "John!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
RS: "Louder!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Us: "JOHN!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
RS: "Louder!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Us: "JOHN!!!!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
RS: "Whisper"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Us: "John"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They. Love. This. I'm sure our superintendent right next door to us does not... haha</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then it is time for the interview portion. I have several pre-made questions written out on some cute stars. The RS chooses a friend to come up and ask him/her a question. The friend comes up and pulls out a question and asks it. Then, I use the response to model correct sentence writing techniques as we make a poster for the RS. We do a total of three questions for each kid. The posters turn out looking something like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ODKigGM0kb8/UE0NVYP0wgI/AAAAAAAAA1Y/7P7i1TaxI3A/s1600/6056276135_d671490420_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ODKigGM0kb8/UE0NVYP0wgI/AAAAAAAAA1Y/7P7i1TaxI3A/s320/6056276135_d671490420_z.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next thing we do is write the student's name together. I model each letter and then students write the letter. This is a great way to model proper handwriting techniques. I used this page with my 1st graders this year:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cXyhIAZRGSc/UE0OA0wNL9I/AAAAAAAAA10/NAfhNCPLN4A/s1600/Slide4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cXyhIAZRGSc/UE0OA0wNL9I/AAAAAAAAA10/NAfhNCPLN4A/s320/Slide4.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made my 2nd graders use this one (several of my 1st graders did choose to use this one instead and I loved that they challenged themselves.):</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r7cQEfgJoc0/UE0OBGKfjOI/AAAAAAAAA18/nRY9Pyu3XRU/s1600/Slide5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-r7cQEfgJoc0/UE0OBGKfjOI/AAAAAAAAA18/nRY9Pyu3XRU/s320/Slide5.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After we have written the student's name together I draw a masterpiece ;) of the student. I try to incorporate things from their interview. For example, if their favorite food is watermelon and their favorite animal is a cat, I draw a picture of the RS eating watermelon in the park with his cat. (If in doubt of what to draw, add a rainbow... kids are amazed by them! ha) These pictures are sometimes goofy because I have no artist ability, but my kiddos are always amazed by my drawing skills. I love little kids. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When I'm finished with my drawing I take it down so they can't copy it and they get started on their own drawing. My 2nd graders have to write a sentence about the RS before they start with the drawing. I take all of the pages and compile them into a book for the RS to take home. On this page, I copy what is one the poster and use it for the first page of their book. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nPMy_sJZ-Ns/UE0OBTn27zI/AAAAAAAAA2I/bRuZeunaOkk/s1600/Slide6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nPMy_sJZ-Ns/UE0OBTn27zI/AAAAAAAAA2I/bRuZeunaOkk/s320/Slide6.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are covers that can be used for the front cover. I copied them onto yellow construction paper this year and glued a photo of the RS onto it where the star is. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vjg3gzBaTvQ/UE0OAJkRSAI/AAAAAAAAA1o/PyStezrw474/s1600/Slide2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vjg3gzBaTvQ/UE0OAJkRSAI/AAAAAAAAA1o/PyStezrw474/s320/Slide2.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SD7PpnedDe0/UE0OAY0Fr0I/AAAAAAAAA1w/61XJt1QzjIs/s1600/Slide3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SD7PpnedDe0/UE0OAY0Fr0I/AAAAAAAAA1w/61XJt1QzjIs/s320/Slide3.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you would like to download a copy of any of this to use, <span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bwg_W6OaLBkOZlNGRlZHZkp5Ums" target="_blank">just click here</a></span>. It's FREE!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I do one RockStar of the Day until everyone has a chance to be the RockStar. This is one of my favorite activities all year- each kids feels so super-special on his/her day. I LOVE it! Plus, it makes a really cute display for Open House. Ours is tomorrow and we had our last RS on Friday, so everyone will have a poster in the hallway- that doesn't always happen. Yay!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<li>Listening to the Bears... and since they won I only heard a little bit of yelling from the hubs today... hehe</li>
<li>Loving- Our weather has been PERFECT this weekend. Mid 70's and sunny... my favorite! The hubs did a 25 bike race yesterday and then we did a 6 mile family ride and the weather made it even better!</li>
<li>Thinking- I actually got everything accomplished that I wanted to last week- and it was a 4-day week... go me! It does take a lot more planning and time spent outside of school, though.</li>
<li>Wanting- I have a new, 4-door, black Jeep Wrangler and I REALLY want black rims for it. My birthday is in October, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.</li>
<li>Needing- My toes look sad, very sad.</li>
<li>Loving- Roscato Rosso Dulce... wine, need I say more? lol</li>
<ul>
<li>TOMS- I could wear these everyday- I own 5 pairs of them now, I might have a problem</li>
<li>I'm thinking of only buying dresses/long tunic shirts from now on so that I can wear leggings to school everyday</li>
<li>I always love my hubs, but I'm treasuring our time more now that I'm back to school and don't get to see him as much... :)</li>
</ul>
</ul>
<br />
One last question for you guys. Do you have a student of the day all year? I've always done Student of the Day, but I'm really thinking about changing it to Student of the Week this year. I'm trying to have students check in homework, do attendance and other things like that. (We are following the Danielson evaluation model and I want to encourage student-initiated accountability.) <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Which do you do? Assign student jobs? Student of the day? Student of the Week? or nothing?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thanks! </div>

I'm sure you have been, too. How is it that I always forget how exhausting the first week of school really is? This year, with my split 1st/2nd group, it feels like I'm teaching twice as much with half the time. It's stressful, confusing, tiring.... and actually a lot of fun. I'm really, really enjoying my students this year. I'm teaching some lessons regular, whole group style, but a lot of what I'm teaching is on grade level. That means, I get to teach to a group of 7-8 at a time. I feel like I already know them better than I knew some of my past classes after a couple of months. So, even though at times I think I might cry when trying to figure out schedules and such, I also feel very lucky and blessed.<br />
Along with my great students, came great parents. I can't say enough great stuff about the group of parents I have this year. I try my best to let my parents know exactly what is going on in our classroom. A month or so ago on Pinterest I found this cool pin-<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QcCOcK4XQTg/UEAJIhLFI5I/AAAAAAAAAzo/6Ao1ZUGJyy4/s1600/Screen%2BShot%2B2012-08-30%2Bat%2B7.44.18%2BPM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QcCOcK4XQTg/UEAJIhLFI5I/AAAAAAAAAzo/6Ao1ZUGJyy4/s320/Screen%2BShot%2B2012-08-30%2Bat%2B7.44.18%2BPM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
Since I teach at a really small school, some of my parents know my personal cell number and I do get texts from them from time to time. However, this is a great way to send mass texts without parents seeing your phone number or the phone numbers of other parents.
<br />
I just sent home the note with my kiddos today and I already have 3 parents signed up to receive texts from me. I love technology! It's pretty easy to setup and when you register you will get an email with a PDF file to copy and send home to parents. Of course, I wanted it to be cutesie so I made my own. <br />
Have you ever heard of <a href="http://remind101.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #6aa84f;">Remind101</span></a>? If not, you should check it out! <br />

I also have a new favorite app. I downloaded <span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/stick-pick/id436682059?mt=8" target="_blank">Stick Pick</a></span> a couple of weeks ago. Rarely do I pay for apps, especially not $2.99, but I took a chance on this one. I really like it. You have the ability to enter multiple classes. The idea behind this app is really simple, it randomly draws children's sticks out of a can so that you can call on them. So, what's so great about that? Well, you can set it up so that is gives you higher level thinking questions when you draw out a name. You get to pick what level of Bloom's you want for each student. Cool, huh? There is also a ESL option for all you that have ESL classrooms or students. I give it two thumbs up! Try it out!<br />
<br />
How is your year going? Are you back to school and settled in already? I can't wait to read about it! I feel like I've been totally out of the loop this week. My darling husband works all day Saturday and Sunday which is a total bummer, but I am looking forward to catching up with all my blog friends! :)<br />
<br />
BTW, when I showed the screen shot up I know you were dying to know what the picture was behind my open Safari screen?.<br />
Here it is:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It makes me smile every time I see it. It's become a joke between the hubs and me. We like to make short little T-Rex arms and hug... it's fun being dorks! :)</div>

I can't believe it has been a week since my last post. It seems like I just posted. Our first full week FLEW by so fast! I was so nervous about my first week teaching my combined 1st and 2nd grade class, but it was so, so good! I am really impressed with my class so far. <br />
We started Daily 5 first the first time ever on Monday. We started the with first two ways to read a book and 3 minutes of practice time. We made it about 2 minutes the first time through and I was a little bit worried. Then, we did our second practice time and almost made it to three minutes. We only had enough time for two practice sessions a day this week because we had early dismissal all week. However, yesterday (Friday) we made it to 7 minutes BOTH times! I am so, so proud of all of my students- they are engaged and super excited about our practice time! <br />
This week, both classes were doing reading review, but next week I'm starting the first story unit with second grade. I'm way, way nervous about being able to fit everything in. My first graders will still (thankfully) be reviewing Kindergarten skills, so at least I get to ease into things somewhat. It is so hard not to spend as much direct instruction time with each group- letting go of control is HARD!!!<br />
I am so thankful for D5, though, because it is teaching me that students don't need me as much as I think they do. We will thrive this year- I just know it.<br />
I made this cute rock themed Stamina graph for our classroom. I have added it to my Poster Set for ELA on TpT. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NOcjsIoH9qA/UDjZMenYojI/AAAAAAAAAx4/j37Vni0oENA/s1600/stamina.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-NOcjsIoH9qA/UDjZMenYojI/AAAAAAAAAx4/j37Vni0oENA/s400/stamina.png" width="311" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I did add this stamina graph to my D5 dog themed poster set on TpT. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/5-Poster-Set-for-Language-Arts" target="_blank">Click here to check it out. </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H6eVoOU37Io/UDjarMy6KPI/AAAAAAAAAyA/4nayUVnUtrU/s1600/dog+stamina.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H6eVoOU37Io/UDjarMy6KPI/AAAAAAAAAyA/4nayUVnUtrU/s320/dog+stamina.png" width="245" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I included several different goal times as well as one that is blank. The entire pack is just $2 and includes 5 daily activity posters, check off sheets, 3 ways to read a book poster, and stamina graphs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyone else out there doing Daily 5? How is it going so far? I will be very thankful for no more early out days, so that we have an extra hour of practice time! </div>

You know it's back to school time when....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rpIe7nC5MQE/UDAGWfOQOuI/AAAAAAAAAww/5l5i65MSKNI/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rpIe7nC5MQE/UDAGWfOQOuI/AAAAAAAAAww/5l5i65MSKNI/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is so, so true for me! I spent the majority of the summer in shorts, a tank, flip flops, and a ponytail. It was very comfy and lazy and wonderful. The only thing that gets me motivated to get up and dressed every morning (besides the cute faces that will be waiting on me) is the fact that I still do a little back to school shopping for myself. Kids get to, so I should too! :)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--mqnPEDC3Ik/UDAGXg0TGLI/AAAAAAAAAw4/hh_y_O4GNdM/s1600/Slide1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--mqnPEDC3Ik/UDAGXg0TGLI/AAAAAAAAAw4/hh_y_O4GNdM/s320/Slide1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ahhhhh! I have a bad dream before the first day of school. Every. Single. Year. I always dream that I have a huge class and I forgot to decorate my room or make plans.... and the kids won't listen to anything that I say. It's horrible, but expected at this point. I think maybe it's a good thing, somehow. Does anyone else have these bad dreams before the first day?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And would you look at this cute little thing? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of my darling students brought it to me on the first day. I do believe it is the first time I've received a back to school gift, and I loved it soooo much! Look at all those great little goodies inside. This mom knows the way to a teacher's heart, I tell ya! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(The Advil made me giggle a little... some days that is so very needed!)</div>

We now know each other and I feel like the kids are starting to understand my style a little better. On our first day, one of the fun things we did was read "Pete the Cat Rockin' In My School Shoes". The kids L.O.V.E.D. it!!! We also listened to the free download from the Harper Collins website. We had a talk about what they each "rocked" in to school that day. I wore a silver sequined tank to top and told them about how I felt like a rockstar in it. (I really wanted to drive home our classroom theme, haha) Then, they each completed a sentence and illustration about what they were wearing that day that made them feel extra special. Here is a picture of a few of them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PtMomqdiCHU/UC7LLRH5YZI/AAAAAAAAAuc/pn1HUF06Ahs/s1600/7801998946_e4492af879_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PtMomqdiCHU/UC7LLRH5YZI/AAAAAAAAAuc/pn1HUF06Ahs/s320/7801998946_e4492af879_z.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Aren't they adorable? I let both of my groups (I teach a 1st/2nd combo class this year) do the same thing, since it was the first day. They had so much fun sharing their special items and their awesome illustrations with the rest of the class. I didn't even really know who/what Pete the Cat was until about a week ago... and now I'm obsessed! I love that little kitty cat!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
************************</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are some pictures of things I've done to get my room ready for my little rockstars. They all loved it and so do I! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is a picture of our behavior board. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The punch cards on the bottom are where students can earn punches for good behavior. They can earn them from me, or any other adults in the building. If I have one my kiddos that is making a not so great choice, I always try to find someone making a <i>great</i> choice and then ooohhh and ahhhh over their good behavior and give them a punch. It usually stops the bad choices in record time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The necklaces at the top are an extra good behavior incentive. For each week that they don't lose any PAWS (our school-wide system), they will earn a bead to add to their necklaces. I plan to let them wear them around school every now and then. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are my Daily 5 baskets that I'm using for my students this year. I got the baskets at Dollar Tree for, you guessed it, a dollar. I love the way the colors pop against my freshly painted bookcases. I made the labels and just used silver curly ribbon to attach the tags. I love how they turned out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

My kiddos start back on Thursday. Our reading series is Reading Street and the first grade curriculum starts with a review unit. This seems pretty helpful for my firsties, but I do go through it much more quickly than they suggest. This year, we will be doing the review stuff for the first 2-3 weeks. Since I'm teaching a combo class this year (1st/2nd) I am planning on also doing a review unit with my second graders. I'm hoping by easing into things it will give us a chance to learn our Daily 5 schedule and get into a bit of a routine. <br />
I feel like I'm finally starting to be able to wrap my head around how I'm going to teach two grades at the same time. I actually am getting really excited about it and I think it will be a great experience for my students. I spent a good amount of time yesterday making some review worksheets that I think my first graders will be able to complete independently while I'm teaching 2nd grade. I wanted to share them with you (for FREE, of course!). These do go along with the Kindergarten Reading Street curriculum, but I think it could work for all first graders. Here is a peak at what is included. <br />

There is a slide for each letter, along with links to websites for extra activities and practice. I used this with my class last year and my kids loved it! If you don't have the same fonts on your computer that I used, you might have to adjust things a little. <span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bwg_W6OaLBkOd0Z2NlJPOTVXUXc" target="_blank">You should be able to download it here,</a></span> if you have problems with it, just leave me your email address and I'd be happy to send it you. </div>
<br />
I'm hoping to get a version of this done for second grade, but I'm not sure it will get finished. The good news is, I have all of my other powerpoint from last year, so I can use those if I have to. I'm also going to have the kids use our iPad and iPods a lot to review- probably mostly with the SpellingCity app and Teach Me. <br />
Are you ready to go back? Do you review at the beginning of the year or just dive right in?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03039834988736281974noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3899382635183088229.post-57302602675612081312012-08-10T21:21:00.002-05:002012-08-10T21:24:05.014-05:00Best Product Ever! & Glitter Makes Everything Better<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br />
When my husband brought the mail inside today, he handed me this. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Za9Msej8HG0/UCW5ltdOSsI/AAAAAAAAArY/kgACg7aKmC4/s1600/Photo15.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Za9Msej8HG0/UCW5ltdOSsI/AAAAAAAAArY/kgACg7aKmC4/s320/Photo15.png" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was like a kid on Christmas because I knew what was going to be inside. The awesome people at <span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="http://www.classroomfriendlysupplies.com/" target="_blank">Classroom Friendly Supplies</a></span> sent me one of their wonderful pencil sharpeners to test out. I was excited, but at the same time a little big skeptical. I mean, they claim it is the quietest and greatest pencil sharpener ever... that's a pretty big claim. I have always had an electric pencil sharpener in my classroom that does a fairly good job- it was going to be hard to convince me that a manual pencil sharpener is worth the extra effort. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then, I tried it.... and oh me, oh my... it really is great!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first pencil I tried to sharpen was a brand, spankin' new pencil. Smooth as butter- and the pointiest, point I've ever seen on a pencil. Really! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FOrdi3tUQQk/UCW5q7HMMII/AAAAAAAAAsY/4zP1ITsYnw8/s1600/Photo9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FOrdi3tUQQk/UCW5q7HMMII/AAAAAAAAAsY/4zP1ITsYnw8/s320/Photo9.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next, I tried one of the worst kinds of pencils ever. You know the ones I'm talking about- those cheapo pencils with the plastic outside that gets all kinds of messed up when you sharpen it. I first sharpened it in my regular, electric sharpener. Here was the result. This is actually one of the best jobs my regular sharpener has ever done with this kind of pencil. Minimal shedding of the icky plastic stuff. Also notice that the point is not completely pointy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3FZwf5DJ07w/UCW5oHrWGaI/AAAAAAAAArw/2vobKFSicnE/s1600/Photo3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3FZwf5DJ07w/UCW5oHrWGaI/AAAAAAAAArw/2vobKFSicnE/s320/Photo3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then I stuck this pencil into my new sharpener... and Wowie, wow, wow!!! (Junie B. voice, please) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WlR_RMSUJ1k/UCW5nkds93I/AAAAAAAAAro/NO2TDn0Jh6c/s1600/Photo2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WlR_RMSUJ1k/UCW5nkds93I/AAAAAAAAAro/NO2TDn0Jh6c/s320/Photo2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Not one little plastic whispy thingy hanging on it all! Check out the point, too, pointest point you ever did see, right? Aaammmaaaaaaazing!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It really was quiet, too. There were a few times I wasn't sure I got the pencil in correctly because it didn't sound like it was working, but it was. It's really that quiet. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ucZD-3I-DeM/UCW5p8upn2I/AAAAAAAAAsI/sbXVBd_wYUg/s1600/Photo7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ucZD-3I-DeM/UCW5p8upn2I/AAAAAAAAAsI/sbXVBd_wYUg/s320/Photo7.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fjSlZXBKFLE/UCW5qSP7hQI/AAAAAAAAAsQ/7z7K7QdHNBw/s1600/Photo8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fjSlZXBKFLE/UCW5qSP7hQI/AAAAAAAAAsQ/7z7K7QdHNBw/s320/Photo8.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will now tell anyone that will listen about this awesome pencil sharpener. I won't even tell you how many of these I sharpened today, just for the fun of it. My students will not be allowed to touch my new <strike>toy</strike> classroom tool. Ever. It's mine, all mine!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, the bottom line is- you need one of these bad boy. Head over to <span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="http://www.classroomfriendlysupplies.com/" target="_blank">this website</a></span> and grab one up! </div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1mjl1sEdLT8/UCW5nOvTm-I/AAAAAAAAArg/gKYq9f9LxaA/s1600/Photo16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1mjl1sEdLT8/UCW5nOvTm-I/AAAAAAAAArg/gKYq9f9LxaA/s320/Photo16.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Did you wonder what I was up to? Well, since I'm a little overwhelmed with my new teaching assignment (<span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="http://firstwithfranklin.blogspot.com/2012/08/how-do-you-plan-linky-big-change-for-me.html" target="_blank">I mentioned it in this post</a></span>) I decided some glitter would make me happy. Makes perfect sense. I pinned the idea from <a href="http://lessonplansos.blogspot.com/2011/08/classroom-promise.html" target="_blank">Lesson Plan SOS</a> a long time ago and today I decided to do it. I wanted to use the glitter clothespins to hang student work in the room, so I wanted to attach thumbtacks to the back. I hot glued the thumbtacks to each of the clothespins first. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
**Do not do this first like I did. Glitter first, clothespins second. Trust me.**</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CoZGgEwWalA/UCW5i-wZJ7I/AAAAAAAAArI/DDSRxBYEjoQ/s1600/Photo13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CoZGgEwWalA/UCW5i-wZJ7I/AAAAAAAAArI/DDSRxBYEjoQ/s320/Photo13.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then, I put my glue on one plate (you could also probably use Mod Podge, but I didn't. I'm a rebel, I know. I just pushed the clothespin into the glue and then into the pile of glitter and then lay them out to dry. Easy, peasy... unless you are a ding-dong like me and have thumbtacks on the back and they won't lay flat anymore. In this case, find a cardboard box to stick the pins into to dry. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QF6HPHyoOJc/UCW5jgYTsBI/AAAAAAAAArQ/Drt4gnAr8rU/s1600/Photo14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QF6HPHyoOJc/UCW5jgYTsBI/AAAAAAAAArQ/Drt4gnAr8rU/s320/Photo14.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8fdQM4oH7RA/UCW5h2uKquI/AAAAAAAAArA/iqp_h0UkVpo/s1600/Photo12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8fdQM4oH7RA/UCW5h2uKquI/AAAAAAAAArA/iqp_h0UkVpo/s320/Photo12.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And look at what you get... gorgeous, huh? I decided to just do two colors, pink for the girls, silver for the boys. After they dried, I took them to school and added them to my student work wall. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kDS6ENk1O9g/UCW5hHHiknI/AAAAAAAAAq4/ECIcyAw0SRs/s1600/Photo11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kDS6ENk1O9g/UCW5hHHiknI/AAAAAAAAAq4/ECIcyAw0SRs/s320/Photo11.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JZXycYyYOSU/UCW5gWnWuRI/AAAAAAAAAqw/fFiY4rV1z9w/s1600/Photo10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JZXycYyYOSU/UCW5gWnWuRI/AAAAAAAAAqw/fFiY4rV1z9w/s320/Photo10.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love, love, LOVE how it turned out. I just need to add students' names and then it will be all finished. What do you think? If you love it, I would love for you to pin it with the button below! :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
How are your rooms coming along? I'm getting closer to being done, but I decided I'm taking tomorrow off from classroom stuff and spending the day with my husband. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy back to school, everyone!</div>

It's all about how we plan - with a $25 Erin Condren GC to one lucky linker! I've always done my lesson plans by myself and I haven't ever purchased a planner. There are three reasons for this:
1. I can't ever fit all the details in those tiny boxes in normal teacher lesson plan books.
2. They are ugly. The ones our school provides is as boring as you can get. Blah!
3. I'm too cheap to buy a cute planner.
But.... I may have found my answer! So enjoy reading my post and the others in the Linky, but do not, under any circumstance go enter it yourself. That way I can win, get it? You'd be doing me a big favor. That's not very bucket-filler of me though, is it? Okay, fine, I want you to enter... really. I do.
I would really love to read some other peoples ideas on planning. Maybe I'll just suck it up and buy one of her planners for myself if I don't win.
<br />
<div align="center">
<a href="http://mrsstanfordsclass.blogspot.com/2012/08/erin-condren-how-do-you-plan-linky.html" target="_blank"><img alt="MrsStanfordsClass" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ky9VMPiyjrI/UBg8-tts5II/AAAAAAAABLk/eLMGzda7a4s/s1600/3AMTeacher_HDYP_linkybutton.png" width="320" /></a></div>
I normally use a template that I make to plan my lessons. <span style="color: #6aa84f;"><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0Bwg_W6OaLBkONjE3ODNmZDktMTdmZS00OTlkLTlkMzAtMTNkNjY3Y2YxYWE5" target="_blank">You can click here to see last year's plans.</a></span> Each day was two pages (or front & back) long, with every little thing listed. I like planning this way because I think it makes it easy for a substitute to walk in and follow the plans without too much trouble. I also have a sub folder that I leave extra plans in- just in case. <br />
It takes a little time at the beginning of the year (or one of the 100 times I have to change the schedule), but weekly planning is pretty quick. <br />
I know many teachers keep lesson plans from the previous year to look back at and help plan the new year. I never do this. I feel like every year I have a completely different class and I need to do things they way they need them (plus it drives me crazy to do things exactly the same way twice- seriously, I can't even stand to watch a movie that I like over again.) So, that's how I plan for school. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: magenta; font-size: large;">Now, my big life-altering (okay, maybe just for me) change....</span></div>
This year I will be teaching a split 1st and 2nd grade class! Ahhhhh!!!! Our school couldn't afford to hire another teacher and our board decided (thankfully, I think) that the single class sizes were too large. This was the solution that was decided on and I got nominated to teach these kiddos. So, now that I told you how I plan, I think I'll have to totally change the way I do everything. I'm <strike>a little</strike> majorly nervous about how to meet common core with both groups and how to teach 2 math lessons a day. I think Daily 5 will be a blessing with this situation, hopefully the first few weeks I can do very similar things with them since neither group has done Daily 5 before. So what other blogs out there are teachers that teach more than one grade? Because I. Need. Help. Please. Pretty please. <br />
I did find Marvelous Multiagers and I'm about to send her a message... anyone know any others??? With only a week left, I'm freaking out! I would love some suggestions, so please send them my way! Schedules, plans, techniques- anything, really. Thanks all, I love ya!<br />
<br />
I guess I need to change my blog to First (and 2nd) with Franklin, huh? I really didn't think I would ever teach a different grade!<br />
<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03039834988736281974noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3899382635183088229.post-77659888403729963502012-08-07T14:58:00.001-05:002012-08-07T15:10:04.429-05:00Common Core Math Sheets- FREE!I have been trying to get ready to take on the new Common Core standards. The math series we use now doesn't align to the new standards, even though they pretend they do. The maker of our series sent us a little packet on how to align to common core, but after looking through it I think they're full of it. That might not be nice, so maybe I can say they are stretching it a bit. I haven't decided how much I'm going to use of the curriculum, but I think I'm going to try to use quite a bit this year while supplementing with other things, and then next year weaning myself from it even further. So, I've decided to find and make some things myself. <br />
All over Pinterest lately I've been seeing this cute picture:<span style="color: #3d85c6;"><a href="http://shoopdedoop.wordpress.com/2012/04/25/todays-number-is/" target="_blank"> (this is as far back as I can track it)</a></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qzwiarXF5V8/UCFtE_TobnI/AAAAAAAAApM/aHOrAe3Z5ms/s1600/pin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qzwiarXF5V8/UCFtE_TobnI/AAAAAAAAApM/aHOrAe3Z5ms/s320/pin.jpg" width="241" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love the idea of it, but it's a little too tough for my students. It also would require some serious independent organization on a piece of paper. I decided to take the idea and make my own sheets for my students. I ended up making several different ones, and I might tweak them a bit once I actually use them with my students. Sometimes you don't know what will work best until you try it out on real students. I don't think they mind being my guinea pigs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Good news for you? I didn't use any clipart, so it's free, free, free! I tried to incorporate several common core standards into these pages. I hope to do a couple of these a week with my kiddos- and eventually have them complete them independently as morning work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u660KtLsRnc/UCFvB8vdz2I/AAAAAAAAAps/b3r-qjPnPos/s1600/Math+Madness4.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-u660KtLsRnc/UCFvB8vdz2I/AAAAAAAAAps/b3r-qjPnPos/s320/Math+Madness4.png" width="247" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KFKrz1oCV6A/UCFvAqBBEMI/AAAAAAAAApU/2OqxCSvVRr0/s1600/Math+Madness1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KFKrz1oCV6A/UCFvAqBBEMI/AAAAAAAAApU/2OqxCSvVRr0/s320/Math+Madness1.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Update: Just in case it wasn't clear: anywhere students see the sunburst shape he/she should write in the magic number. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I didn't use "today's number" because I'm not sure we'll have time to do this every single day. I thought Magic Number seemed fun- I think I'll even make it a little game where I pull the "Magic Number" out of a bag after giving them clues about what it could be. Like this:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The magic number is more than 2.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The magic number is less than 20.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The magic number is even. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The magic number has one digit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And so on until they guess my magic number... fun, right? We have done similar things in past and my students always love to "beat" me when I'm teasing them and telling them that they'll never guess my number. Isn't teaching all about making them totally engaged while acting totally silly? Well, at least that's how I roll. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While I was working on math sheet anyways, I decided to add some 120 charts to the mix... it's going to be hard getting used to saying 120 instead of hundred number chart... darn that common core. I do agree that my students should be counting higher than 100, but I just like that nice, round number. I made a few different charts because I think some students need different things. I always have a few that get stuck on what to do when they finish a row, this one is for those kiddos:</div>

I also made some that have the multiples of 5 filled in, and the 10's column already finished. I like to have something filled in at the beginning of the year, just to make sure they don't get off track and then I get stuck erasing the entire page. I also made a blank one for when students are ready to tackle it. <span style="text-align: left;">Here is a peak at those:</span></div>

Is there anything you would add to these pages? Give me some good ideas and maybe I can add to the packet. :)<br />

I love doing these fun little Currently and then stalking all the other blogs to see what my peeps are up to right now. So, here is what I'm Currently thinking and doing. Can't wait to check out everyone else's!<br />

#1- My Silhouette machine has been so cool this summer. I have made student behavior guitars, Calendar words, and some labels. I love, love, love it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
#2- The laminating machine. I use the one at our school- we pretty much have free use of it and I take advantage. I know that some of you have your own laminators and that is sooooo tempting. I would love to have it at home, but while I can use my school's as much as I need, I'm going to stick with the free option!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
#3- This will be my first year doing Daily 5 in my classroom, so I have a feeling my Daily 5 book will be stuck to me like glue! I have read it once and I'm working on a second time. I'm excited & nervous about implementing it for the first time.</div>

Do you have parent volunteers in your classroom? I have never really tried to recruit parent volunteers before, but I am going to have a large class this year (27) and I want to explore my options. I know that my superintendent would be okay with parent volunteers in the room as long as they aren't doing any assessments or grading. I would like to invite parents to volunteer, but I'm not sure where to start. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
How are you able to recruit volunteers? Do you ask specific people or just send home a request with all students? What exactly do you have your parent volunteers do in your classroom?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I would love to hear from others how you handle this in your classroom. Thanks! :)</div>
